You have surely seen them. You search for something and before the regular results comes a written-up answer at the very top, often with a few sources linked alongside. That is Google’s AI Overview, and it has moved the goalposts for what it means to be visible on Google.

For you as a local business it raises a fair question: how do you end up in that answer? The short answer is that you cannot force your way in, but you can make your business one of the sources the overview prefers to draw from. Here is how it works, and here is how you work with it.

What the AI Overview actually is

The AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that Google sometimes shows at the top of the results. Instead of just listing ten blue links, Google writes up an answer directly to the question, and links the pages the answer is built on.

The important thing to understand is where it gets its material. The overview does not invent information out of thin air. It draws from Google’s regular search index, that is, the same index that decides which pages rank on a regular search. So the work you have already done to be visible on Google is not wasted. On the contrary, it is the very foundation.

Another thing worth noting: the overview often draws from several pages at once. It weaves a sentence from one source together with a detail from another. That means you do not have to own the whole answer to be included. It is enough that your page is the clearest source for the part of the question you can actually answer best.

The foundation is still local SEO

Since the overview is built on the regular search index, the starting point is simple: if you are not visible in Google’s regular results for a query, you rarely show up in the AI answer either. Pages that already rank high and profiles that are already strong in local search are the ones most often pulled in.

For a local business that means your local SEO is the base here too. An accurate and complete Google Business Profile, the right categories, consistent name, address and phone number across the web, genuine reviews, and pages that clearly say where you are and what you do. It is the same work that makes you visible in the map results, and it is the same work that makes you a likely source when someone searches for something you can answer.

That is also why there is no separate “AI button” to press. You do not optimize for the AI Overview alongside everything else. You build a strong, clear and trustworthy presence, and the overview rewards the same thing the rest of Google already does.

Write so that you are easy to quote

Here the work differs a little from old SEO. An AI Overview looks for something it can lift out and rewrite into a short answer. The easier you make it, the greater the chance that your wording is the one that gets picked.

A few concrete principles:

  • Let the heading be the question. If people search “how often should you service your car”, then let a heading on the page say roughly that, and let the paragraph directly below answer it. Google likes it when the question and the answer sit close together.
  • Answer first, explain later. Put the direct answer in the first sentence after the heading. Then feel free to add nuance. An answer that requires reading five paragraphs to find the point is harder to quote.
  • Keep the answers self-contained. A sentence that works without the rest of the page around it is a sentence that can be lifted out. Write so that a single piece can be understood on its own.
  • Be concrete. Vague phrasing gives nothing to quote. Clear, specific answers (without making up figures you do not have) do.

This is essentially what what GEO is is about: writing and structuring content so that it works as a source for AI-generated answers, not just as a page a person scrolls through. The same habit helps you in the AI Overview as in other AI answers.

Structured data and Google Business Profile

Two more things make it easier for Google to understand, and therefore easier to pull you in.

The first is structured data. It is code markup in the background that tells Google what different parts of the page actually are: that this is opening hours, this is an address, this is a common question with its answer, this is a price. You do not see it as a visitor, but it makes the content machine-readable in a way that plain body text is not. A page with FAQ markup where the questions are exactly what people search for is a clear example: you serve the question and the answer in a format Google recognizes right away.

The second is your Google Business Profile. For local searches it is often one of the sources Google trusts most when it comes to facts about your business: what you are called, where you are, when you are open, what you offer. If it is half filled in, out of date, or contradicts what is on your site, you become an uncertain source, and uncertain sources are rarely pulled in. Keep it accurate, complete and alive, and you become easier to trust.

None of these things are a trick. They just make your content easier to understand and to verify, and that is exactly the kind of source an AI Overview prefers.

Be honest about what you do not control

Here comes the important caveat. You do not control the AI Overview. Google decides for itself whether an overview is even shown, which sources are pulled in, and exactly how the answer is phrased. It can differ between two similar searches, and it can change over time without you having done anything.

That means you should not chase guarantees or promise yourself a given spot in the answer. There is no such spot to buy or demand. What you can do is influence the input: how clear, accurate and quotable your content is, and how strong your presence is in the regular search index. That is where your work actually bites.

See it as the difference between controlling the outcome and improving the odds. You cannot decide that your sentence will appear in the answer. You can make your sentence the best candidate for the job. That is a healthier, more honest measure, and it is the one that holds up over time.

Summary

The AI Overview is Google’s AI-generated answer at the top of the results, and it is built on the same regular search index as everything else. That is why the foundation is familiar: strong local SEO and a well-kept Google Business Profile. On top of that you add content that is easy to quote, with headings that are the question, direct answers first, and structured data where it fits. You do not control exactly what is shown, but you decide how good a source you are. Do that work, and you raise the chance that it is your business that gets pulled into the answer.
